Movie Trivia/Goofs

  • Movie Goof (anachronisms): Bird's-eye/satellite images are used to contrast the story's earthly developments and the universe Hypatia tried to disclose. These images show 400 AD Alexandria along with modern man-made Suez Canal, Assuan Dam, Lake Nasser and Toshka Lakes (created in 1998).
  • Movie Goof (factual errors): Although the film shows Synesius abandoning hypatia and attacking her theories when she refuses to convert to Christianity, in reality it was Hypatia who broke off all contact with Synesius. No record exists of his ever having tried to convert her and his letters to her even after she refused to respond are full of glowing praise for her, begging for a reply. His last surviving letter was written to her.
  • There were days when shooting had to delay for a few seconds. This was because of the nearby churches of Kalkara, Vittoriosa amongst others which have their bells obviously ringing at mid-noon. These bells have been in use for decades. The bells could be heard from the sets of Ricasoli.
  • Movie Goof (factual errors): The Library of Alexandria was destroyed in a series of different periods, including an accidental yet debatable 4th Century C.E. accounts stating by Julius Caesar (no contemporary accounts of Caesar back this up, Caesar died in 44 B.C.E.), and by orders of the Christian Emperor Theodosius I in 391 C.E., sixteen years before Hypatia's murder in 415 C.E. It was finally destroyed by Muslims in 642 C.E.
